The Palestinians have prevailed. It was a unilateral ceasefire on the part of the Israelis, voted for unanimously by the Israeli Security Cabinet. This came after a phone call by Biden on Wednesday, where he stated that \u201c<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-middle-east-57195537\">he expected a significant de-escalation today on the path to a ceasefire<\/a><\/span>&#8220;. The Israeli bombings ended with a phone call. Hamas followed suit. There were celebrations well into the night in Gaza and Jerusalem. Palestinians were praying freely in Al-Aqsa mosque Friday morning.<!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">The chart for the ceasefire is below (<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/malvinartley.com\/PDF%20Files\/charts\/israeli_ceasefire_may_2021.png\">bigger<\/a><\/span>). We won\u2019t analyze it here, except to say the Sun had just entered Gemini, showing the calming of tensions between \u2018the quarreling brothers\u2019 \u2013 the twins of Gemini in other words. The Sun had been trine to Pluto in the past days, showing the increased diplomatic activity behind the scenes on the part of the Egyptians, who brokered the ceasefire. Libra was on the Descendant, also showing the diplomacy involved. The Moon was trine Uranus, showing the suddenness of the event, and was also sextile to Mars, easing the tensions. And lastly, the Sun was in a partile square with Jupiter, showing the exuberance of the celebrations by Palestinians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1790 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/malvinartley.com\/blog.malvinartley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/israeli_ceasefire_may_2021-1024x738.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/malvinartley.com\/blog.malvinartley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/israeli_ceasefire_may_2021-1024x738.png 1024w, https:\/\/malvinartley.com\/blog.malvinartley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/israeli_ceasefire_may_2021-300x216.png 300w, https:\/\/malvinartley.com\/blog.malvinartley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/israeli_ceasefire_may_2021-768x554.png 768w, https:\/\/malvinartley.com\/blog.malvinartley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/israeli_ceasefire_may_2021.png 1365w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Both sides are claiming victory. On the whole, though, it was a small but very significant victory for the Palestinians and a first step on the way to Palestinian liberation from the apartheid state, despite the heavy losses in lives and infrastructure they suffered. The Israeli reaction to the ceasefire is more subdued, with people on the street saying there will be no peace until Hamas is wiped out. They are also saying the ceasefire is a loss for Israel. It is true there will be no real peace in the interim, but it is questionable Hamas will ever be wiped out. Israeli invincibility and impunity has been punctured.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">What has emerged from this, then? There will be reassessments on both sides, about what happened, about strategy, about the way forward. On the Israeli side, Bibi\u2019s alleged purpose in dragging out the bombing was solely political, in that he wanted to go on for longer to shore up his support in the Knesset. Instead, he is losing support within Likud. His political fortunes appear at the moment to be diminished, consistent with his astrology. <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/unnamed-likud-officials-netanyahu-drawing-out-gaza-conflict-to-stop-lapid-forming-govt\/\">Insiders within his party stated as much<\/a><\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNetanyahu is drawing out the operation in Gaza because Lapid is holding the mandate,\u201d a senior political adviser in the party says. \u201cHe doesn\u2019t seem to have a real desire to eradicate Hamas. Relations between the Arabs in Israel and Jews are being left in ruins,\u201d the adviser says. \u201cNetanyahu is galloping toward a fifth election and taking the country hostage. The collapse of right-wing chairman Naftali Bennett gives him a boost, but support for him within the Likud is weakening.\u201d Other elements in the right-wing bloc tell the newspaper that it is thought Netanyahu believes the conflict with Hamas will boost his image in fifth elections. \u201cHe is building on the fact that Yamina will be wiped out,\u201d unnamed party officials tell the newspaper.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">After the ceasefire was announced, <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ejmalrai\/status\/1395616800054910983\">Bibi was nowhere in sight<\/a><\/span>. Some politicians in Israel slammed him for the ceasefire, saying <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/politicians-slam-netanyahu-for-gaza-failures-reported-ceasefire-conditions\/\">it was an embarrassment for Israel<\/a><\/span> and that the bombing of Gaza accomplished nothing. This was despite Bibi\u2019s assertions that the operations were \u201c<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog-may-21-2021\/#liveblog-entry-2549766\">extraordinarily achieved<\/a><\/span>\u201d. <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ejmalrai\/status\/1395963292800143360\">This sort of rhetoric is rolled out after every war with Gaza<\/a><\/span>, with the addition that Hamas had been &#8216;defeated&#8217;. What we had with the extended bombing, then, and if the preceding is true, was a political act by Netanyahu instead of Israel\u2019s \u2018self-defense\u2019. <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/.premium.HIGHLIGHT-behind-the-gaza-cease-fire-netanyahu-surrendered-to-biden-and-blamed-the-army-1.9830426\">Bibi had to surrender to Biden<\/a><\/span> and blamed the ceasefire on the IDF and security forces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">At the end of hostilities, there were 12 dead Israelis as a result, but 261 Palestinians dead and close to 2,000 injured. Of the Palestinian dead, 65 of those were children. Israel claims there were <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ELINTNews\/status\/1395599104865079296\">\u2018<span style=\"color: #993300;\">hundreds\u2019 of Hamas militants killed<\/span><\/a>, but that would appear to be hyperbole and doesn\u2019t tally with UN figures. But it is an attempt to boost the confidence of the populace, along with the claims of <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/israel-gaza-strikes-destroy-hamas-tunnel-network-2021-5?IR=T\">60 \u2013 100 miles of Hamas\u2019 tunnels being destroyed<\/a><\/span>. A quick look at the geography of Gaza puts that figure highly in question. Gaza is only 27 miles long and 7 miles wide. The IDF is known to exaggerate successes and to minimize defeats. They call their bombing campaigns in Gaza, \u201cmowing the lawn\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">During the operations on both sides, a young journalist working for the Associated Press, the building housing the organization in Gaza having been flattened by Israeli bombing, was <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/politics\/article\/Emily-Wilder-Associated-Press-Israel-Palestine-AP-16192391.php\">unceremoniously fired from her job<\/a><\/span> after pressure from conservatives, following their discovery of her past social media postings in support of Palestinians. This was an example of conservative \u2018cancel culture\u2019 and only goes to demonstrate the bias and control exerted over US media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Given the bias in US media toward Israel, here are a few \u2018facts on the ground\u2019 you will not hear in mainstream news, relative to what has just taken place over the last days:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">The Israelis flinched. They called for the ceasefire after Biden\u2019s phone call.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">The Palestinians are <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/s_m_marandi\/status\/1395320282374672384\">for the first time dictating terms<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">The IDF did not invade this time, in distinction to 2014, denoting either overconfidence in the IAF or fear of what they would encounter had they done so.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Israeli citizens are not celebrating, but instead are wary. There is no longer confidence among the Israeli public that a real deterrence has been achieved, or that Hamas can be defeated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Bibi\u2019s political fortunes are in question still and a 5<sup>th<\/sup> election looks to be on the way<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">The Palestinians sense a renewal of their fighting spirit<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">The Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood is saved for the Palestinians, at least at the moment<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Al-Aqsa mosque remains open to Palestinians to pray freely. Large numbers have attended for Friday prayers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">From <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/malvinartley.com\/blog.malvinartley.com\/2021\/05\/20\/hamas-and-israels-black-year\/\">the previous post<\/a><\/span>, it would appear that the first phase of a larger plan by the Resistance has been fulfilled. The Israeli actions in East Jerusalem and in Sheikh Jarrah have for the moment been halted. An uneasy truce has been achieved. But unless Israel changes its behavior, the peace will not last. Palestinians will now begin to push harder for their rights, as in ending the blockade, for starts. Hamas has made gains in the past seven years despite the blockade and minimal support. Western attitudes have shifted slightly away from full-throated support for Israel. It could very well be that the increasing number of Democrat voices rising against Israeli actions prompted Biden\u2019s phone call to Netanyahu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2021-05\/21\/c_139960528.htm\">China will be sending emergency humanitarian aid to the Palestinians<\/a><\/span>, while <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/article\/international\/biden-says-us-will-replenish-israel-s-iron-dome-air-defense-systems-121052100102_1.html\">the US is sending replacement interceptors for the Iron Dome<\/a><\/span>. The interceptors are manufactured in the US. Biden also promised to send humanitarian aid to Gaza, however, and to help in its reconstruction. Such help in reconstruction efforts in Gaza by the US in the past have been lackluster at best.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">This latest round of war between Israel and Gaza has indeed been a turning point in favor of the Palestinians. Instead of the divide-and-conquer tactics used by the Israelis against Palestinians weakening Palestinian resolve, Bibi\u2019s efforts at trying to hold on to power have instead united the Palestinians. This cannot have gone unnoticed within the Israeli establishment. It will be very interesting to watch what happens in Israeli politics as a result of this latest round.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Ultimately, we will not see any immediate change in the dynamics between the Palestinians and the Israelis \u2013 until the next flare-up. And that may be in the next few days, even. <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/al-aqsa-mosque-clashes-first-day-israel-hamas-cease-fire-2021-5?IR=T\">Not even a day had passed<\/a><\/span> when Israeli soldiers started firing tear gas and rubber bullets into Al-Aqsa mosque, again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">We watch as these next few months unfold as to Bibi\u2019s fortunes and to Palestinian demands for change.
