Just so you know, this post has nothing to do with the famous play by Eugene O’Neill by the same name. Some of the subject matter in the play may have a role in what will follow here, though. But this isn’t theater. With the recent shootings of American citizens by ICE officers in Minneapolis, that city has become yet another bellwether for the testing of the American soul. There have been celebrations in many cities, mainly across the West regarding the capture kidnapping of Nicholas Maduro of Venezuela. Hi, ho, the merry-o, the brutal dictator is gone. Freedom has returned to Venezuela! So the story goes. But is it the truth? In what Trump has called “one of the most stunning, effective and powerful displays of American military might and competence in American history,” Maduro was seized by Delta Force and DEA operatives in Caracas in the early morning hours of January 3. The wreck of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, 50 years on

November 10th is a solemn day of remembrance for Merchant Mariners in the US and abroad. On that day 50 years ago, during a November storm, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald broke in half and sank to the bottom of Lake Superior. There were no survivors. The 12-day Israel-Iran War

In the early morning hours of Jun 13th 2025 Tehran as rocked by a series of explosions. The Israelis had just launched ‘Operation Rising Lion’, an attempt at overthrowing the leadership of Iran – a regime-change operation. The Israelis claimed the attacks were targeted to destroy Iran’s nuclear program, but the operation’s title gave the real game away. The ICJ ruling: What’s next for Israel?

On the 26th of January the ICJ gave its first ruling on the Genocide Convention case brought by South Africa against Israel. The case is still a ways from being fully decided, but the preliminary ruling gave probable cause there was in fact genocide in Gaza and the Israelis were told to cease and desist as well as to allow humanitarian aid through to the Gazans. The Eschatology of Netanyahu

Eschatology: /ˌɛskəˈtɒlədʒi/ Def: the part of theology concerned with death, judgement, and the final destiny of the soul and of humankind.

Bibi Netanyahu has gotten himself and Israel into a real pickle. Seeing the commencement of the Al-Aqsa Flood operation by Hamas as his golden opportunity to finally rid British Mandate Palestine of the Palestinians, he has, along with his cabinet, grossly miscalculated the resolve and the ability of the Palestinian resistance. The IOF may think it has months to clear Gaza of Hamas, but more informed sources say Israel has only weeks instead of months to do so – and there are doubts that will happen at all. Operation Al-Aqsa Flood

On the morning of 7 Oct 2023 Hamas launched its response to the storming of the Al-Aqsa mosque by Israeli settlers, with its Operation ‘Al-Aqsa Flood’. There were claims that over 5,000 rockets were fired into southern Israel from Gaza. Israel has declared ‘a state of war’. The Great Gaza Jailbreak of 2023

On October 9th 2023 a senior Hamas official announced it had ‘achieved all of its targets’ in Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, and was open to negotiations to end the conflict. Yet the conflict continues. War in the Sahel or operatic undertones?

On 26 Jul 2023 there was a military coup in Niger. The Western-backed leader, Mohamed Bazoum was detained and confined to house arrest by the presidential guard, led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani. This was the 4th such coup in West Africa within the last three years. It points to a trend, with the old European colonial powers one-by-on being kicked out of their old African colonies.
