The partial lunar eclipse of 18 Sep 2024

The full moon of 18 Sep 2024 is also a partial lunar eclipse. It is also a supermoon, as well as the Harvest Moon for 2024. There will be two more supermoons after this one. But this eclipse will have some importance and bearing going into the US election in November, as well as effects for the US in April of next year. For more, read on…

This eclipse is number 52 of 73 in the lunar Saros series 118. This is therefore a waning eclipse cycle. In itself it is not an especially powerful eclipse. However, it will be activated by another eclipse on 14 Mar 2025, the latter which will be a total lunar eclipse, thus reactivating and enhancing the effects of this eclipse for whomever this one will affect, including nations.

The eclipse figure shows the Moon in Pisces, conjunct Neptune at the north node, thus making Neptune the lord of the eclipse, with all that implies. On the positive side Neptune gives receptivity, active fantasy or imagination, increased sensitivity, ability for contemplation, an empathic understanding or compassionate sensitivity, a dreamy nature, an inclination to mysticism or even mediumship. In the negative Neptune gives a negative impressionability, over-sensitivity, vagueness or lack of clarity, confusion, fanciful notions, deception, a lack of planning ability, a lie or a fraud. Depending upon the orientation of the person or nature, the effects will be noted, for good or ill.

This eclipse could be called the ‘Atlantean eclipse’ because it will be visible over all of the Eastern United States and Western Europe – the borderlands of the center of power in old Atlantis. The visibility for the eclipse is shown below (bigger):

The eclipse will also be visible over the entirety of South America and Western Africa. It will start at 00:41 UTC and end at 04:47 UTC. The cited visibility is at the maximum eclipse, at 02:44 UTC. As for the visibility, we have the following:

“A tiny bite out of the Moon may be visible at maximum, though just 8% of the Moon will be shadowed in a partial eclipse lasting for 1 hour and 3 minutes…A shading across the moon from the Earth’s penumbral shadow should be visible at maximum eclipse.”

Coming to the astrology, then, the chart for the eclipse is below, (bigger):

Covered in a bit, the eclipse impacts the US, so we take a reading of the Sabian symbols (being uniquely American) for the Sun and Moon, as follows:

    • “A boy with a censer serves the priest near the altar.” (Sun, 26th degree of Virgo)
    • “Watching the very thin moon crescent appearing at sunset, different people realize that the time has come to go ahead with their different projects.” (Moon, 26th degree of Pisces)

Dane Rudhyar, from his Astrological Mandala book, had the following interpretations of the symbols: For the solar symbol – “The boy must learn to serve, humbly and with intense attention, in what as yet is beyond his spiritual understanding.” For the lunar symbol he wrote about the fallacy of totalitarianism.

As an axis, the meaning of the two Sabian symbols is fairly clear: If one (or a nation) acts according to the old order (the lunar degree), there is a danger of falling into a totalitarian mode of thinking and acting, i.e. seeking to hold fast to the status quo with the dead letter of law. The old order is dying, while a new one emerges. Clinging to the past only yields ossification and eventual destruction. The solar degree, representing the rising vitality and newness, calls upon us (or a nation) to serve humbly and with intense attention to the reality being presented. The emerging reality is as yet beyond one’s comprehension. What do the aspects and midpoints in the eclipse figure express, then?

The Sun forms a Grand Trine in earth with Uranus and Pluto. Opposing the Sun are the Moon and Neptune, with the latter two at the apex of a 3rd-harmonic triangle with Uranus and Pluto. The entire pattern forms a 3rd-harmonic kite. This is an extremely beneficent planetary combination, focusing the power of the Neptunian triangle outward through the Sun. It is revolutionary in what it represents, with the involvement of Uranus and Pluto. Uranus and Pluto in combination represent the collapse of old orders and the emergence of the new. All this is enhanced, or perhaps even overstated, with the presence of Jupiter in a separating square with the eclipse axis.

An additional release point for the energy represented in the earth Grand Trine is the approaching square of Venus with Pluto, representing enflamed passions. A Grand Trine in earth represents the ability to manifest ideas into physical form in a spiritual sense, while at a personal level it gives a strong ability at managing physical resources – money, land, people, etc. The Virgo emphasis of the Sun gives a strong sense of detail, the ability to delve deeply into a subject and good critical/analytical skills. The counterpart to that is the Moon/Neptune conjunction in Pisces, challenging the Sun person or aspect represented to take time for reflection and to allow intuitive insight to form without killing it in over-analysis.

The Uranus/Pluto trine with the Moon/Neptune ensures that whatever is presented to the reasoning mind will overcome the sometimes staid and circumspect Virgoan analysis represented by the Virgo Sun. Close attention to the vision presented (Virgo) will assure that the new order presented (Pisces) will succeed, so long as one does not seek to hold on to the past. There will be abundant passion involved to ‘punch through’ any difficulties presented on the path forward which is presented.

The death of an old order is also shown in the midpoints to the eclipse axis, where we find our familiar ‘death axis’ (Mars/Saturn midpoint). The closest midpoint (exact) is the Mercury/node, pointing toward a ‘community of thought’ and exchange of ideas. Those ideas will be vigorously debated, given that Mars is at the bending of the nodal axis, showing the possibility of conflicts of interests, as well as the ability for debate to reveal quick consensus. Where is all this likely to manifest, then?

Mention was made of the United States at the start of this post. The eclipse axis falls on the US Neptune, the latter which also squares the US Mars. Jupiter in the eclipse figure sits on the US Mars, while Mars in the eclipse figure sits on the US Sun/Jupiter conjunction. Uranus in the eclipse figure is in partile square with the US Moon. A song comes to mind:

The natal Mars/Neptune square describes the high idealism of Americans along with the militancy of those ideals at times. It also points to the think-tank beliefs in America’s ‘manifest destiny’ as the sole leader of the free world. As far as Washington is concerned, it’s good to be the king. Well, ‘the king’ is about to be dethroned, not to be replaced and the American public sees through the charade of ‘freedom and democracy’.

Ideals are all well and good, but they don’t put a roof over one’s head and food on the table. So now we have this ‘election’ on the 5th of November, two wars going quite badly for ‘the Empire’ and an economy that – contrary to what we are told – is not in the best of shape, shall we say. And it goes without saying (but we will anyway) that the US is facing a real estate crisis, a lending crisis, inflation, lack of affordable health care, problems at the border, an opioid crisis, food deserts, a strident political divide, a wealth chasm, foreign interference in our politics (and it ain’t the Russians, Iranians or the Chinese)…need we go on?

The revolution at which we are looking here is one of our self-image and self-esteem as a nation. Leadership follows on from that. But we Americans are set for a reality check on what it means to be American – and to borrow a line from The Sopranos, “It won’t be cinematic.” However, we need to see our place in the world as it really is, and ourselves as we are, really. If Tuesday night’s debate between Trump and Harris was any indication, the next administration will do little if anything to address the challenges facing the US. The American war machine will march on, at the expense of the American public, no matter which candidate Is elected.

There are a few other nations in recent news that will also be affected by this eclipse and the activation by another eclipse next year. Syria (1941 chart) has the eclipse on their Sun, nodal axis and Neptune, showing a shift in its image across the world and its leadership. Syria is playing a key role behind the scenes in assisting Hezbollah in the Israeli war against the Palestinians. Syria is also well on the road to re-normalizing relations with its Arab neighbors.

Ukraine (independence chart) has this eclipse on its Mars. There is quite a lot of talk in independent media about the impending collapse of the regime in Kiev and the Ukrainian armed forces. But there are also rumors of some sort of act of desperation by Kiev in an effort to draw NATO fully into the war there. Europe is divided on what to do with Ukraine, but the Americans want Ukraine to fight on ‘to the last Ukrainian’.

The eclipse axis is square a Jupiter/Uranus opposition in the Israeli chart (4:15 chart), the latter representing speculation and hopes of a good outcome from the same. Bibi wants to take the war to Hezbollah. Well, it goes to the old saying of ‘be careful what you wish for…you may get it.’

And as a final state for this post, the Iranian chart shows the eclipse on the Iranian Mars. Iran is prepared for war in the region, which would mark a distinct change of direction for Iran, as they have been based in a largely defensive position since 1979, the year of their revolution. But they vowed a strong response to Haniyeh’s assassination in Tehran by the Israelis, for which the Iranians fully expect a strong overreaction from Israel in return. And when it comes to war, both Russia and China have Iran’s back. There is too much at stake for those three nations for Iran to be defeated. That brings us to the culmination lines, below (bigger):

The Sun culmination line cuts through Vladivostok (where the Eastern Economic Forum was just held – many business deals in the works), Tokyo, Western New Guinea and Adelaide. The Moon and Neptune culmination lines run through Rio de Janeiro. Of particular interest with these culmination lines, given the state of world affairs, is that of Mars, which runs through Central Asia, including far eastern Iran and straight through the Strait of Hormuz. One of Iran’s first acts in the event of a regional war would be to close the Strait of Hormuz, which would send oil prices soaring to the stratosphere.

The Pluto culmination line runs through the central US, through Texas and then Mexico, while the Saturn culmination line runs through Brazil. A spike in oil prices just before the election would be a black swan event for the US and undermine the already teetering economy. Just be certain you top up all your petroleum reserves if you live in Europe or the US if Bibi gets his war. We hope Bibi gets thrown out of office first, which would avoid the war. That brings us to the activations of this eclipse.

The first and probably only planetary activation comes from Saturn at the median date of 11 Apr 2025, which is after the activation by the 14 Mar 25 eclipse. Saturn is generally seen to be the ‘finisher’ of eclipses. That effect will begin to be felt about a month before the median date, starting with the March eclipse and last roughly for a month after. But there is more.

Eclipses always come in pairs, sometimes in triplets. The companion eclipse to this one is an angular solar eclipse on the 2nd of next month, which falls on the US Saturn and squares the US Sun. Transiting Mars will be on the US Sun at the time of that eclipse. If there is going to be a regional war involving the United States or a sharp escalation in Ukraine we can probably expect it to erupt from now through to mid-October, with the effects upon the nation as outlined above regarding the national ideals, showing in the first quarter of next year. But there are many factors that can mitigate the ‘necessity’ of such a regional war in West Asia, as Netanyahu sees it.

The fact Bibi is trying to provoke a wider war is shown by sharp escalation in Israeli bombings raids in Lebanon and Syria. Those raids are meant to provoke either Lebanon or Syria, or even Iran, to overreact, thus ‘justifying’ Netanyahu in declaring war on any of the three aforementioned Resistance factions. The Israelis know they cannot win such a war, so there would be tremendous pressure on Congress to take the US to war. But the Resistance (Hezbollah, Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Iran) see through the ruse and refuse to bite. Then there are Russia and China who have pledged to help the Palestinian cause, along with the Resistance. All the while, Americans are being conditioned to consent to go to war against Iran.

This eclipse will plant the seeds for what is to come. The real effects from it will be felt next year. It may well also indicate a trigger for events now. West Asia and Ukraine are at critical junctures, where any small event can trigger an overreaction or mistake that could result in far more tragic consequences, more so than what we see now.

At the same time, in times of crisis like these strong souls can and do step forward to steer a path out of the crisis to a just outcome. We do not see such leadership among our current crop of leaders in the West – yet. But they are there. People of sound minds and common sense do exist in the halls of power. All that is needed are the right conditions to call them forth. Perhaps this eclipse will give the impetus and signal to bring such people to action. In the meantime the election circus in the US continues…
